Psoriasis is a long-lasting chronic autoimmune disease which is characterized by patches of abnormal skin. These skin patches are typically red, itchy, and scaly. Typical psoriatic scales are silvery and develop in thick, red patches. In some cases, these patches cracked and start bleeding.

Types of Psoriasis

Plaque psoriasis: It is the most common type of psoriasis. About 80 % of people suffering from psoriasis have plaque psoriasis. There are red, inflamed patches that often covered with whitish-silver scales or plaques. These plaques are commonly found on the elbows, knees, and scalp.
Guttate psoriasis: It occurs commonly in childhood. There are small pink spots. The most common sites are - torso, arms, and legs.
Pustular psoriasis: These occur commonly in adults. The most common sites are smaller areas of the body, such as the hands or feet, but it can be widespread.
Inverse psoriasis: Inverse psoriasis causes bright areas of red, shiny, inflamed skin. Patches of inverse psoriasis develop under armpits or breasts, in the groin, or around skin folds in the genitals.
Erythrodermic psoriasis: This type of psoriasis often covers large sections of the body at once and is very rare.Scales that develop often slough off in large sections or sheets. It uncommon for a person with this type of psoriasis to run a fever or become very ill.
Symptoms of Psoriasis
Psoriasis symptoms differ from person to person and depend on the type of psoriasis. Areas of psoriasis can be as small as a few flakes on the scalp or elbow or cover the majority of the body.
Most common symptoms of are:
1. Red patches of skin covered with silvery scales
2. Small scaling spots (commonly seen in children)
3. Dry cracked skin that may bleed
4. Itching, burning or soreness
5. Thickened, pitted or ridged nails
6. Swollen and stiff joints
7. Not every person will experience all of these symptoms. Some people will experience entirely different symptoms if they have a less common type of psoriasis.
Causes of psoriasis
The exact cause is unknown, but according to Scientists, they have a general idea of two key factors: genetics and the immune system.
